Grade = 1 + 9 × (score ÷ max score)
This linear model, also called the correction model or 1+9p model, converts the percentage correct (score divided by the maximum) into a grade on the 1-to-10 scale. The number 1 is the minimum starting value (ensures that even 0% yields a 1), and 9 is the multiplier for the percentage. At 0% you get exactly a 1 (the lowest grade), and at 100% exactly a 10. It is the most common system in Dutch secondary education, except for some schools that apply an N-term or other model. The simplicity and predictability make it widely trusted.

- Assuming 50% score gives a 5. Under the linear model it is 1 + 9 × 0.5 = 5.5, not 5. This is a common expectation error.
- Forgetting that 0 points still gives a grade of 1, not a 0; the Dutch grading system has no grade 0. This prevents complete failure from being recorded as zero.
- Assuming this linear model is used everywhere. Some schools apply an N-term, others use a completely different correction model. Always ask your teacher which model your school uses.
- Not knowing how to apply rounding rules. A 5.95 may round to 6, but 5.94 should not—check your school's rules. Teachers sometimes use different conventions.

Does every Dutch school use this linear model?
Most do, but not always. The vast majority of schools in the Netherlands use the 1+9p linear model as a foundation. However, many schools apply an N-term (a correction number from Cito) to compensate for test difficulty, or they use a completely different model. Always ask your teacher which model your school uses for definitive answers about your future tests.
What is an N-term and how does it work?
An N-term is a correction number determined annually by Cito (the central exam institute) for each central exam subject. This number is added to or subtracted from the linear grade to compensate for unexpectedly harder or easier exams in that year. For example, if the exam turned out harder than expected, everyone gets a +0.3 bonus points. This number applies only to central exams (final exams), not to all tests throughout the school year.
From which grade do you officially have a pass?
In the Netherlands a 5.5 or higher usually counts as a pass, although this can vary by school and exam. A grade of exactly 5.5 is typically rounded up to 6 in reporting. For some schools or specific subjects, the minimum may be higher (e.g., 6.0). Always check your school's specific rules, as criteria may vary. In secondary education (havo/vwo) 5.5 is standard, but final exam rules may differ.
Can the grade come out higher than a 10?
Mathematically yes—if you score more than 100% (e.g., 105 points out of 100 total), the linear model formally yields more than 10. In practice this can happen if bonus or extra credit points are awarded, but the Dutch grading system officially does not recognize grades higher than 10. Most schools cap such scores at 10. Ask your teacher what your school's policy is.
How do I calculate how many points I need for a certain grade?
You can reverse the formula: Desired grade = 1 + 9 × (points ÷ maximum), so points = (Desired grade – 1) ÷ 9 × maximum. For example, for a 6.0 out of 100 points: (6 – 1) ÷ 9 × 100 = 5 ÷ 9 × 100 = 55.56 points needed. For a 7.0 you need about 67 points. This calculator can also help by entering the values.
