Points Needed for a Grade
If you know how many points a test is worth and what grade you want, you can calculate in advance the minimum score you need, instead of working out your grade afterwards and being disappointed. This calculator uses the standard Dutch/Belgian 1-to-10 grading scale.
結果
7.8
Points you still need
- Total score needed
- 77.8
How this was calculated
- 1Calculate the required percentage(8 − 1) ÷ 9 = 77.8%
- 2Convert to points0.778 × 100 = 77.8
公式
Points needed = ((target grade − 1) ÷ 9) × max score
This reverses the linear correction model (grade = 1 + 9p, where p is the percentage scored). Flipping the formula first gives the percentage p that matches your target grade, which is then converted into a points value based on the maximum score. The difference between this needed score and your current score is exactly how many more points you need.
ステップ解説
- 1Enter your current score and the maximum possible score of the test.
- 2Enter the grade you want to achieve.
- 3Read off how many more points you need and the total required score.
計算例
You have 70 out of 100 points and want an 8
→ You need 77.8 points, so 7.8 more.
You have 50 out of 80 points and want a 7
→ You need 53.3 points, so 3.3 more.
You have 90 out of 100 points and only want a 6
→ You only need 55.6 points; you have already comfortably met your goal.
Reference table
| Target grade | Required percentage |
|---|---|
| 5.5 | 50.0% |
| 6 | 55.6% |
| 6.5 | 61.1% |
| 7 | 66.7% |
| 7.5 | 72.2% |
| 8 | 77.8% |
| 8.5 | 83.3% |
| 9 | 88.9% |
| 10 | 100.0% |
Based on the formula grade = 1 + 9p; multiply the percentage by your maximum score for the required score.
よくある間違い
- Forgetting the needed score can exceed the maximum if the target grade is too high for the remaining room.
- Entering the wrong maximum score, which throws off the required percentage compared with the real test.
- Assuming the grading system is always linear from 1 to 10; some schools or countries use a different scale.
活用シーン
- Working out beforehand how many questions you need right before a test.
- During an exam, judging whether it is already safe to stop early.
- Setting study goals by knowing what percentage is needed for a desired average.
よくある質問
Can this come out negative?
Yes, if you already have more points than needed for the target grade. Then you have already reached your goal, and the calculator shows that no extra points are needed.
What if the required score is higher than the maximum?
Then the target grade is not achievable on this single test with the current maximum score; you would need a higher maximum or need to compensate through another component.
Does this also work for grading scales other than 1 to 10?
No, this calculator assumes the linear 1-to-10 scale common in the Netherlands and Belgium. A letter scale (A-F) or a 0-to-100 scale would need a different formula.
How do I calculate the percentage I already have?
Divide your current score by the maximum score and multiply by 100. Enter that score as "current score" to see whether you are already on track for your target grade.
