Points Needed for a Grade

If you know how many points a test is worth and what grade you want, you can calculate in advance the minimum score you need, instead of working out your grade afterwards.

Formula

Points needed = ((target grade โˆ’ 1) รท 9) ร— max score

This reverses the linear correction model (grade = 1 + 9p). Flipping the formula gives the percentage p that matches your target grade, which you then convert to points.

You have 70 out of 100 points and want an 8

โ†’ You need 77.8 points, so 7.8 more.

  • Forgetting the needed score can exceed the maximum if the target grade is too high for the remaining room.

Yes, if you already have more points than needed for the target grade. Then you have already reached your goal.
