How this was calculated
  1. 1Calculate the percentage correct75 รท 100 = 75%
  2. 2Apply the correction model1 + 9 ร— 0.75 = 7.8

Formula

Grade = 1 + 9 ร— (score รท max score)

This linear model, also called the correction model, ensures 0% gives a 1 and 100% gives a 10. It is the most commonly used model in Dutch secondary education, though a teacher may apply a different model or an N-term adjustment.

Worked examples

75 out of 100 points

โ†’ Grade = 1 + 9 ร— 0.75 = 7.8.

55 out of 100 points

โ†’ Grade = 1 + 9 ร— 0.55 = 5.95, usually rounded to a 6.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming 50% score gives a 5. Under the linear model it is 5.5, not 5.

When to use it

  • Checking your own test before the official result is out.

Frequently asked questions

Does every teacher use this model?

Not necessarily. Some teachers apply an N-term or a different correction model; this is the most common one though.
