Formula

VAT = net amount ร— rate โ€ข net = gross รท (1 + rate)

To add VAT you multiply the net amount by the rate (e.g. 0.21). To extract VAT from a gross amount you divide by 1 plus the rate (e.g. รท 1.21). A common error is subtracting 21% of the gross amount, which gives too low a net amount.
