🧾 VAT Calculator
VAT (VAT/IVA/TVA in EU) is a hidden tax in the price you pay. Shops often show "€50" but that already includes VAT. This calculator lets you choose: add VAT to a net amount, or extract the hidden tax from a gross price. Handy for invoicing and budgeting.
Net amount
£100.00
VAT
£21.00
Gross total
£121.00
VAT amount: £100.00 × 21% = £21.00
Gross (net + VAT): £100.00 + £21.00 = £121.00
Formula
Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + VAT%). Extract: VAT = Gross − Net
Steps
- 1Choose mode: "Add" if you have a net amount, or "Extract" if you have a gross amount.
- 2Enter the amount.
- 3Enter the VAT rate (default 21% in Netherlands).
- 4Read off the VAT amount and totals.
VAT rates by country
| Country | Standard | Food |
|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | 21% | 9% |
| Germany | 19% | 7% |
| Belgium | 21% | 6% |
| UK | 20% | 0% |
Food and medicine often have lower rates. Always check current rates.
commonMistakes
- Adding VAT instead of extracting: you get 121% instead of EUR 121.
- Using the wrong rate: rates vary by country and product category.
- Forgetting VAT is already in shop price: you always pay the gross amount.
useCases
- Invoicing: Calculate how much net to invoice to achieve a certain gross amount.
- Shopping: Extract how much you really pay net when you see a shop price.
- Budgeting: Know how much of your amount goes to tax.
