Worked examples
€ 4,000 gross, 37% tax, 5% pension, holiday allowance separate
→ Net ≈ € 2,394 per month.
Common mistakes
- Counting holiday allowance twice: once in the monthly figure and again separately in May or June.
- Confusing the marginal tax rate (on your last bit of income) with the average rate over your whole income.
Important to know
- This is an indicative calculation. Tax credits, the labour tax credit and personal deductions are not modelled separately, but are implicitly reflected in the average rate you enter.
When to use it
- Translating a new salary offer into what you keep each month.
- Estimating the effect of a higher pension contribution on your net pay.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my average tax rate?
Your payslip shows the payroll tax withheld; divide that by your gross pay for your average rate. The Dutch Tax Authority also offers a calculator.
Why doesn’t this calculator use fixed tax brackets?
Tax brackets and credits change every year. A hard-coded model would silently show wrong amounts over time; entering your own rate is more reliable.
