Profit
£19,000.00
Return
+190%
Difference per coin: £58,000.00 − £20,000.00 = £38,000.00
Multiply by the number of coins: × 0.5 = £19,000.00
Formula
Profit = (sell price − buy price) × number of coins
You multiply the difference between sell and buy price per coin by the number of coins you held. The percentage return is expressed relative to the buy price: (sell − buy) ÷ buy × 100. This is a gross calculation based purely on the price difference.

warnings
- In some countries crypto gains are taxable; consult a tax adviser for your own situation.
commonMistakes
- Forgetting to factor in exchange trading fees, so the actual profit is slightly lower than the gross result.
- Confusing the return percentage with the profit amount: a small amount invested can still produce a huge percentage.
- Looking at a single trade in isolation without accounting for earlier losses on the same coin, which skews the overall picture.
useCases
- Evaluating your result on a closed trade before reinvesting or withdrawing the proceeds.
- Comparing different sell scenarios to decide at what price you want to lock in a profit.
- Keeping track of your portfolio for personal records or as preparation for your tax return.
