Result
£58.16
Total due
- Import duty
- £10.75
- VAT
- £47.41
How this was calculated
- 1Duty: (value + shipping) × rate£215.00 × 5% = £10.75
- 2VAT over value + shipping + duty£225.75 × 21% = £47.41
Formula
Duty = (value + shipping) × rate • VAT = (value + shipping + duty) × VAT rate
Import duty is calculated over the value of the goods plus shipping. VAT is then charged on that total, INCLUDING the duty already calculated — VAT is applied on top of the duty, not alongside it.
Worked examples
€ 200 goods + € 15 shipping, 5% duty, 21% VAT
→ Duty € 10.75, VAT € 45.26, total € 56.01.
Common mistakes
- Calculating VAT on only the goods value, while shipping AND duty also count towards the VAT base.
Limitations
- The duty rate varies greatly by product category (from 0% to well over 10%); look up the correct rate for your product.
When to use it
- Estimating in advance what an order from outside the EU will actually cost.
