📝 Weighted Grade Average Calculator

In a weighted average, not every test counts equally: an exam might weigh twice as much as a quiz. Enter up to four grades with their weights and see the true average instantly, including the calculation steps.

Weighted average 7.25
Multiply each grade by its weight and sum: 7×1 + 8×2 + 6×1 = 29
Divide by the total weight: ÷ 4 = 7.25

Formula

Average = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)

You multiply each grade by its weight, add up those results, and divide the sum by the total weight. A plain (unweighted) average is really just a special case where every weight equals 1. Grades with weight 0 are excluded, so you can also use the calculator with fewer than four grades.

Steps

  1. 1Enter the grade and its corresponding weight for each test (for example 1, 2 or 3 depending on importance).
  2. 2Leave unused rows at weight 0; they are automatically ignored.
  3. 3Read off the weighted average, along with the intermediate calculation steps.

Common weighting schemes

ComponentTypical weightNote
Quiz1Lowest weight, usually counts only lightly
Homework1–2Regular, but usually not decisive
Midterm test2–3Weighs more than individual assignments
Final exam3–5Usually determines the largest part of the final grade

Guideline values; your teacher or institution sets the exact weighting.

commonMistakes

  • Treating weights as percentages that must sum to 100, while relative weights (like 1, 2, 1) work just as well.
  • Taking a plain average of grades that should actually carry different weights.
  • Leaving an unused grade field at its default value with a weight above 0, which skews the average.

useCases

  • Determining your interim average before the last grade is in.
  • Checking whether you're on track to pass across differently weighted tests and exams.
  • Comparing different course syllabi with their own weighting schemes.
