Before setting off on a trip, it helps to know what it will cost in fuel. Enter the distance, your car's consumption (usually L per 100 km) and the current fuel price to instantly see the amount and the litres needed. Formula
Litres = (Distance ÷ 100) × Consumption. Cost = Litres × Price per litre
A car's consumption is usually given per 100 kilometres, not per kilometre. That's why you first divide distance by 100 to find how many times that consumption applies, multiply by the consumption figure for the number of litres, then multiply by price per litre. Driving style, speed, load weight and tyre pressure can make real consumption differ from the factory figure by 10–20%.

commonMistakes
- Entering consumption in km/litre (backwards!) instead of L/100km — this gives completely wrong results.
- Calculating only the outward trip and forgetting a return journey doubles the total.
- Using factory consumption for city driving (much worse in practice) or motorway figures for local traffic.
