How this was calculated
  1. 1Litres needed(500 รท 100) ร— 6 = 30 L

Formula

Cost = (distance รท 100) ร— consumption ร— price per litre

A carโ€™s consumption is usually given per 100 kilometres. You divide the distance by 100 to find how many times that consumption applies, multiply by the consumption for the number of litres, and multiply that by the price per litre for the total cost.

Worked examples

500 km, consumption 6 L/100km, โ‚ฌ 1.85/L

โ†’ 30 litres, โ‚ฌ 55.50 total.

Common mistakes

  • Entering consumption in km/litre instead of litres/100km, which makes the result completely wrong.

When to use it

  • Budgeting the fuel cost of a holiday or business trip.
